Is the Avila Institute right for you?

Our students are DRE’s, catechists, parents, lay leaders, educators, volunteers, clergy, religious, and Catholics from a variety of professions. Whether you are seeking personal enrichment, continuing education credits or a graduate certificate in Spiritual Theology, the Avila Institute is here to assist you as you grow in your Catholic faith.

Admission Requirements

The following requirements are the norm but students who find themselves in circumstances outside of the norm should not be deterred from contacting admissions to determine if they are eligible for any of the programs.

Graduate Program

    • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent (equivalent can include life experience, professional experience, etc.)
    • The ability to comprehend and interpret the teachings

Continuing Education

    • An Associate’s degree, vocation certification or equivalent (equivalent can include life experience, professional experience, etc.)

Personal Enrichment

    • A desire to deepen one’s faith and the ability to learn the material on a graduate level.

School of Spiritual Formation

    • A desire to deepen one’s faith.
Application Process

A completed Application for Admission must be submitted by all prospective students. The application process includes a personal statement of no more than 200 words indicating the reasons you are applying for the program you are interested in. For the Graduate Program, there is also a writing sample of no more than 500 words within the application process.

Only one application needs to be filled out. Potential students may apply by the deadline of the quarter in which they would like to begin courses. Once accepted into the Avila Institute, you will be notified concerning registration for courses each quarter.

There is a nonrefundable application fee of $40 for laity and $15 for the ordained and religious (including consecrated) to be submitted with the application. We will continue to take applications after the due date for a late application fee of $75 for laity and $25 for ordained and religious.

Application Deadlines (Deadlines are subject to change based on when courses begin each quarter.)

School of Spiritual Formation:

  • Fall Quarter
    • Session 1 (September – October) by September 1
    • Session 2 (November – December) by October 31
  • Winter Quarter (December – February) by December 31
  • Spring Quarter
    • Session 1 (March – April) by March 1
    • Session 2 (May-June) by April 27
  • Summer Quarter (June – August) by June 17

Graduate Program:

  • Fall Quarter by August 15
  • Winter Quarter by November 15
  • Summer Quarter by May 15
  • Spring Quarter by February 15

*Applications will be considered after this deadline; however, a late application fee may be included.

Technical Requirements

Live/online/interactive courses require the following technological capabilities:

    1. A computer that is less than 5 years old
    2. A web camera
    3. A head set with built-in microphone – we recommend a USB or plug in based headset like the Logitech Clearchat Headset, but students should be sure any headset they purchase is compatible with their computer.
    4. An internet connection with download speeds of 1.5 Mbps. This can be ascertained by visiting such sites as SpeedTest.net.
Time Commitment

Graduate Program and Continuing Education: Students should plan for two hours of study time for each hour of class time. Each course will meet for at least two hours per week while in session.

Personal Enrichment and School of Spiritual Formation: Students should assume a half hour to an hour of study time for each hour of class time.

Cost

Graduate Program, Continuing Education and Personal Enrichment: The cost of our online program is $150 per credit hour ($450 for a three credit hour course). The total Graduate Program of 40 credit hours is $6,000. This cost does not include books or other required materials. If a payment plan is not selected, courses must be paid in full before the start of the course.

Certification Requirements

Graduate Program Certification Requirements
  • Students must successfully complete a total of 40 credit hours.
  • Students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (B-) to earn the Graduate Program Certification.
  • All students must successfully complete a spiritual reflection paper on an approved apostolic experience.
  • Students must attend an approved retreat experience.
Continuing Education Certification Requirements
  • Students must pass each enrolled course (graded on a pass/fail basis).
Personal Enrichment Certificate Requirements
  • Students must pass each enrolled course (graded on a pass/fail basis).
School of Spiritual Formation Requirements
  • Students must pass each enrolled course (graded on a pass/fail basis).
